How to find a place to live in Revelstoke
A practical guide for seasonal workers and anyone moving to Revy: when to look, what it costs, where to look, and how not to get scammed.
The short answer
- Start early. Most people arrive in October and November, before the hill opens (Revelstoke Mountain Resort is due to open on 5 December 2026), and rooms go fast.
- Expect a room in a shared house. The typical room listed on Revy Rooms this season is $950 a month, and most are between $865 and $1,175.
- Make yourself easy to find. Post a "looking for a place" profile, message lots of people, and tell everyone you meet that you're looking. Plenty of rooms go by word of mouth.
- Never pay before you've seen it, in person or on a live video call.
When to start looking
The big wave is autumn. Most seasonal workers land in October and November to get settled before the resort opens, and that's when rooms get snapped up. There's a smaller wave in spring and early summer for the summer season.
If you already have a job, start looking as soon as you know your dates. If you're arriving without a place, book somewhere for your first week or two (a hostel, a short-term rental or a friend's sofa) so you're not deciding in a rush.
What it costs
Most people in Revy rent a room in a shared house. Whole houses, suites and apartments cost more and usually go to groups or couples.
- Typical room
- $950/mo most $865 to $1,175
- Typical whole place
- $2,300/mo 22 listings
- Listings this season
- 36 since 27 September 2026
These figures come from listings on Revy Rooms and update by themselves. See all the rent figures.
Up front, budget for:
- your first month's rent
- a security deposit of up to half a month's rent, plus up to another half if you have a pet
- somewhere to stay while you look
Where to look
- Revy Rooms. Browse places by price, move-in month and what's included, and see how you'd fit with each household. Post a profile so people with a room can message you, and turn on email alerts to hear about new places first.
- Facebook groups like Revy Rentals. They're busy, and they're where scammers go: one group moderator said he'd blocked around 400 suspected scammers from joining.
- Your employer. Ask before you look anywhere else. Revelstoke Mountain Resort has staff accommodation at the base of the mountain, and some other employers house staff too.
- Property managers in town, mostly for whole places and longer leases.
- Word of mouth. Tell people at work, in the pub and on the hill that you're looking. A lot of rooms never get advertised at all.
How I found my places
My first season, I lived in a friend's basement in Arrow Heights. Then I moved out to Catherwood, out of town near the airport, with friends. For my second season I moved into a house in Southside.
Every one of those places came from getting talking to people and finding housemates through informal networking. If you're new to town, it can be tough: you either need local links, or you reach out to a lot of people and hope something works. That's why I built Revy Rooms.
Which part of town?
Where you live matters more in Revy than you'd think, mostly because of winter and whether you drive.
| Area | Good for | Typical room |
|---|---|---|
| DowntownIn the centre of town | No car, working in town, and being close to everything. | $850/mo |
| Arrow HeightsAbout 45 minutes' walk to downtown | Skiers, people working at the hill or the hospital, and anyone after a more residential feel. | Not enough yet |
| SouthsideAbout 15 minutes' walk to downtown | Walking to town without living right in the middle of it. | Not enough yet |
| Columbia ParkAbout 25 minutes' walk to downtown | Drivers, quick highway access, and people working at the hotels nearby. | Not enough yet |
| Big EddyAbout 30 minutes' walk to downtown | Mountain bikers, sledders and Nordic skiers, and anyone who wants a bit more space. | Not enough yet |
| Near the resortNot walkable to downtown | Living close to the lifts, especially if you work at the resort. | Not enough yet |
Places in Farwell, Johnson Heights and out of town are listed under "Other". More on each neighbourhood.
Make yourself easy to say yes to
In the autumn, people with a room get a lot of messages. The ones who find a place fast make it easy to see who they are.
- A clear photo of your face and a few honest lines about you.
- Your dates, your budget and where you'll be working.
- Whether you have a car, a pet, or a lot of gear.
- Take the living-style quiz, so people can see how you'd fit in their house.
- Reply quickly, and be clear about when you can move in.
What to ask before you agree
- What's included in the rent: heat, electricity, internet, laundry?
- How long is it for, and what happens at the end of the season?
- How much is the deposit, and will you get a written agreement?
- Is there parking, and room for skis, bikes or a sled?
- How far is it to work, the shops and the bus?
- Who else lives there, and what are the house rules on guests, noise and parties?
- Is it furnished? If not, what do you need to bring?
Get the key details in writing, even if it's just in a message. Rent, dates, the deposit and what's included are what people most often disagree about later.
Deposits and your rights in BC
Most rentals in BC are covered by the Residential Tenancy Act. Under it:
- A security deposit can be no more than half of the first month's rent.
- A pet damage deposit can be no more than another half month's rent, however many pets you have.
- Landlords can't charge a fee to accept or process your application.
- Once the tenancy ends and the landlord has your forwarding address in writing, they have 15 days to return your deposit or apply to keep some of it. If they don't, they can be ordered to pay you double.
One big exception: if you share a kitchen or bathroom with the owner of the home, the Act doesn't apply. That's common in Revy, so if you're renting a room in the owner's own house, agree the terms in writing. Disputes in that situation go to the Civil Resolution Tribunal or the courts, not the Residential Tenancy Branch.
Renting a room from another tenant rather than from the landlord? Then you're usually an occupant, not a tenant, and you can't use the Residential Tenancy Branch. Disputes between roommates can't go to the Branch either, even if you all signed the same lease. Those go to the Civil Resolution Tribunal or Small Claims Court.
This is general information, not legal advice. For your own situation, check the BC Residential Tenancy Branch or TRAC (links below).
Spotting scams
Revy in the autumn is exactly the kind of busy rental market scammers like. Watch for:
- a "landlord" who's away and can't show you the place
- a deposit or rent wanted before you've seen it
- rent well below similar places, or photos that look like a hotel
- pressure to decide right now
The rule that stops almost every scam: never send money until you've seen the place in person or on a live video call. More on rental scams in Revelstoke.
